Phils Circus Days

Benefits of Circus Skills

Circus skills can help achieve many of the objectives in the Every Child Matters initiative.

Be Healthy

- Mental Health - relaxes and alleviates stress.
- Physical Health - Improves cardio vascular fitness as well as gross and fine motor skills.
- It is physical education that can engage children that are not usually interested in sports!

Enjoy and Achieve

- The skills taught can be seen as the epitome of focused play.
- Teaching the importance of personal space, working one on one and in groups.
- The children will gain confidence as they pick up new skills.
- Inspires children to aim for new goals.
- Can be used as an incentive/reward for good conduct.

The Primary Framework

Through step-by-step learning the children will be subconsciously learning logical thinking and problem solving, both of which are invaluable for the numeracy initiative.

Cross Curricular Potential

- The circus days directly involve physical education and drama.
- They also indirectly involve many other subjects. They can, for example, be used by teachers for demonstrating:

  • The concept of gravity in Science.
  • Patterns and logical thinking in Mathematics.
  • The different types of entertainment in History.

Circus skills are a great "brain gym" activity teaching pupils to use both sides of their brains.

Make a Positive Contribution

- Encourages peer support, inclusion and engagement to a high level.
- Each child will find something that they can perform well and help their peers with.
- Helps build confidence and promotes anti bullying and good behaviour.
- Juggling clubs can be started at the school which could engage parents and the wider community and become part of an out of hours learning scheme.

Spinning Plates

The benefits of juggling are clearly shown in the recent teachers TV program "Juggling with Success" (see:- Link to Video). My circus workshops will give the children an exciting and memorable day.As they say in the Excellence and Enjoyment strategy 'Children learn better when they are excited and engaged'.

Phil spent two exciting and fun packed days with us. He was very careful to set out all the safety aspects of the workshop before we started and managed the children excellently throughout the session. The children had the opportunity to see and then try many circus skills and they are still practicing them now in the playground. The work that the children did, from nursery upwards, fitted beautifully into so many aspects of the curriculum and from start to finish was really motivating. More than anything else, the children learnt a great deal whilst having a wonderful time. I can recommend Phil’s circus skills for a thrilling day of real fun!
